End of the 2019 Golf Season - A Review

To say the golfing season ended abruptly would be an understatement.  This past Tuesday, November 5th was our last day of the 2019 golfing season. The very next day, 4 inches of snow fell and has since covered the golf course.

Golf Course Snow

I'm happy to report 2019 was a great year for Bucks Run, but also a trying one for not only our course,  but mostly all courses in Michigan. This was due to the weather that came our way in the spring.  April was fairly good weather considering the month and how conditions can typically be very unpredictable.  But the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers" was a little off.  In May, we saw 21 days of measurable rain fall.  When this happens, it is not only tough on the rounds played, but also makes life tough on our Grounds Crew who work so diligently to give our golfers the best conditions possible.  Fortunately, we were able to get past May and enjoyed some excellent weather during the summer months.

Special Events Recap

This year was filled with some amazing events.  They ranged from a Murder Mystery Dinner, to Free Fitting Days, to an End of the  Year Scramble, to the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational Qualifier, to on-course Tequila/Craft Beer Tastings, a Wild Game Dinner, and more.  While all events went over well, we had a few that are worth mentioning, so you can be sure to mark your calendars to join the fun next year!

  • Couples Night Out Scramble – We began hosting these scrambles in 2018, which include 9 holes of golf for two, a $40 voucher for dinner following the round, and prizes for the winners for only $75 per couple. These scrambles took place once per month, and are a great value for our customers. Over the 2019 season, we averaged around 40 golfers per night in the scramble.
  • Tees, Tequila and Tacos – For years, we have held craft beer tastings on the course, and pair these fine brews with tasty dishes from our Quarry Grill. While we will stick with this type of event in the future, we wanted to give it a different spin in 2019 with tequila and tacos!  August was a perfect month to host this event during the heat of the season.  While tequila is not for everyone, the variety of cocktails made, along with a unique taco selection from the Quarry Grill, really hit the spot!
  • The Big Buck Open – Our Head Professional, Emily, wanted to host a year-end scramble to finish the year strong. With a goal of creating a unique event, we decided to mix-in some new concepts. We created unique teeing positions, paired with difficult pins. For example, when the players tee’d off on #10, they did so from the putting island next to the golf shop. We also had 4 different chili stations on the course, paired with 4 different craft beers.  This was a hit, with 132 golfers on the course that day, and people being able to play from positions they have never seen before.

While we are sad to see the golfing season come to a close, we are excited to prepare for 2020 and all of the fun times that will come our way.  Please also keep in mind that even though the snow may be flying, our Quarry Grill Restaurant is open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 5PM.  We invite you to come out and try some fantastic food, prepared by our excellent Culinary Team.
